the brush is the main drawing tool and is selected with B, or in the first position of the tool row. left click paints with the primary color, and right click the secondary color. try it on the canvas:

hold shift and scroll, or tap [] to quickly modify the brush size.
straight lines
hold ctrl and click to draw a straight line from your last pixel.
